You really don’t need a great deal of protein in order to be well which brings me to the worrying trend of the high protein diets including protein powders, soy isolates and shakes. Too much protein intake together with a low fat diet can lead to vitamin A deficiency, it burdens the digestive system and has been linked to cancer. Welcome back to our series on Traditional Foods- the foods which our forefather enjoyed, back when modern diseases like obesity and diabetes were a rarity. (1) Having read part one and two in this series you’re now aware of the importance of good quality fats in your diet along with the powerful healing capacity of organically produced, fresh, heirloom vegetables and fruit. Today we will look at nuts, seeds, grains and legumes, a group of foods which are similarly nutrient-dense and at the same time the source of much confusion and discussion around the health blogosphere.
Welcome back to my series on Traditional Foods- the very foods which early researchers such as Weston A Price found to be the hallmarks of the most robustly healthy folk on the planet. Today- thanks to supermarkets, food is not nearly so tricky to come by as it was in pre-industrial times. At the same time the quality of our convenience foods does not appear to be doing our health any favours. (7) With a little guidance and research however you too can whip up gourmet, healing remedies in your own kitchen from locally sourced produce.
A FOUR PART SERIES Part 1.
Healthy Fats & Oils and the consequences of a 'low fat diet'. Hands up if you’ve tried them all- diets that is. It seems that with the explosion that is electronic and social media has come an equally contagious rash of diet regimes. ‘Lose weight fast’ diets, ‘teen’ diets, ‘very low carb’ diets, ‘primal’, ‘paleo’, ‘vegan’, ‘raw food’ diets, ‘detox’, ‘ketogenic’, ‘two five’ diet, not mention plain old fashioned ‘I’m seriously starving- low calorie’ diets. It hasn’t always been this way you know- if Great Grandma or the original Australians could only see us all now- what would they have to say about our multi-billion dollar diet industry that for many of us can consume our every waking moment and drive us to depression or at the least total despondency. |
